Transforming the Pork Industry in India’s North-East Region

Enabling Sustainable Growth Through Capacity Building & Institutional Strengthening

SkyQuest worked with a well-known European livestock innovation institute and a well-known global charitable organization in a project that would change the pork value chain in India's North-East Region (NER). The goal was both clear and complicated. It was to make the pork industry more competitive and sustainable through localized capacity building, institutional collaboration, and a strong train-the-trainer model.

The Challenge

Fragmented nature of backyard-level farming with low productivity

Low access to modern breeding, feeding, and biosecurity practices

Absence of skilled technical workforce and scalable training systems

Weak linkage between upstream production and downstream processing/marketing

Insufficient knowledge of market compliance, export preparedness, and meat quality standards

Though pork is a huge part of the culture and food scenario in NER, the region's pork industry was limited by these factors. The area needed a solution that was both systemic and scalable to improve technical skills and strengthen links in the value chain.

Our Approach

SkyQuest, along with our collaborative partners, implemented an impact-driven methodology anchored on the four aspects of:

01. Ground Mapping & Needs Assessment

More than 300 stakeholders from the pork value chain to be consulted in order to determine infrastructure requirements, skill gaps, and the possibility of switching from backyard to organized farming systems.

02. Trainer Network Formation

Upstream (breeding, farming, health) and downstream (slaughter, processing, marketing) expert trainer cohorts to be formed and outfitted with contemporary techniques.

03. Tailored Capacity Building

Working together to create modular training programs on pig farming, health, nutrition, genetics, processing, and marketing to be delivered through in person, online, and e-learning modes.

04. On-Ground Mentorship

Long-term capacity and knowledge transfer to be fostered by field-based training missions and practical sessions led by international experts to ensure real-world application and reinforce learning

SkyQuest also made sure that the experts and Indian stakeholders worked together smoothly and that all logistics were in place so that all activities could be carried out smoothly across all locations.

Key Outcomes

  • Mapping and involving more than 300 stakeholders in the pork value chain.
  • The formation of professional training teams in both the upstream and downstream domains.
  • The creation and implementation of modular training initiatives.
  • Facilitating the deliberate shift from pig farming for subsistence to organized, environmentally safe production.
  • Establishing self-sufficient training communities that can share expertise and enhance sectoral results.

Why It Matters

This project demonstrates SkyQuest's ability to provide sector-specific, high-impact capacity building initiatives in developing nations.

We are contributors for the establishment of a competent, and market-ready pork industry in one of India's most dynamic regions by means of contextualized training, data-driven planning, and international cooperation.

Unlocking Livestock Innovation to Transform Smallholder Farming in India

India's livestock sector accounts for more than 25% of agricultural GDP. Still productivity remains low, especially among smallholder farmers. To unlock its full potential, SkyQuest, with support from one of the largest private foundations in the world, conducted a first-of-its-kind study mapping 500+ livestock technologies developed by public and private institutions across India.
